Feeling Like You are Walking on Eggshells

One of the first signs of divorce is when a spouse feels like they are constantly walking on eggshells in order to avoid an argument. Constantly feeling on edge or like anything might start a fight is a sign that divorce may be imminent between a couple.

Contempt in Arguments

If there is true contempt in arguments between spouses it could mean that a divorce is forthcoming. Contempt is different than anger or frustration and is a true devaluing or disrespect of the other spouse in the argument. If one spouse does not respect the other the marriage may be ending soon.

A Lack of Communication

Another sign of impending divorce is a lack of communication between spouses. If a spouse believes that communicating is pointless or unproductive with their spouse a divorce may be imminent. This could be because they believe that communication only leads to arguments, hurt feelings, or defensive behavior. If spouses cannot communicate, a marriage is difficult to maintain.

A Lack of Intimacy or Infidelity

A lack of intimacy between spouses can be another sign of potential divorce. While bodies change over time, physical intimacy may become less frequent; however, when intimacy ends altogether between spouses that may be a sign of a larger problem. This is particularly true if one or both spouses is engaging in infidelity with others outside of the marriage.

Prioritizing Other Relationships

Prioritizing other relationships over that with a spouse is another sign of divorce. This may be relationships with friends, other family members, coworkers, or people on social media. This in turn may lead to emotional affairs, which can be just as detrimental to a marriage as physical infidelity.

Planning an Exit

The last sign of potential divorce is when a spouse finds themselves planning their exit from the marriage. If someone is actively thinking about how to end their marriage, set up a new life, living with someone else, and filing for divorce it is time to speak with an attorney. This is particularly true if a spouse has taken active steps in this plan, such as setting up a separate bank account or moved out of the house.
